Harlequin Revamps Dance Studio at Toronto’s Canadian Opera Company

The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts is the first building of its kind in Canada; a 2000-seat theatre specifically designed for opera and ballet with the finest possible level of acoustics. The purpose-built opera house is designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects and is the permanent home of the Canadian Opera Company and the performance venue for The National Ballet of Canada.

In 2021, when the decision was made to renovate the existing FSC ballet studio, the facilities and technical teams from the COC turned to the experts at Harlequin Floors.  A Harlequin WoodSpring® sprung floor dance system was chosen to upgrade the 2,200 square foot dance studio. Harlequin WoodSpring is a 3-layer, modern update on traditional ‘basket weave’ construction installed exclusively through the Harlequin Contracts Division. After reviewing the site conditions, it was determined that a custom sprung floor system would need to be installed in order to bring the floor up to level.  Harlequin’s Technical Manager specially designed a 4-layer WoodSpring system to make up for the height difference between the standard WoodSpring system and the old floor that was removed. The professional sprung floor system was completed with Harlequin Cascade™, the popular vinyl marley performance surface preferred by The National Ballet of Canada.
