Vinyl Marley Floors

What are marley floors?

In the 1970’s Marley Floors Ltd in England manufactured a double-sided floor for dance, but their production line closed in 1977. Their Export Sales Manager, Bob Dagger, decided to set up Harlequin Floors and began production of a similar floor, which he called Harlequin Reversible™. The term “marley floor” has become a generic term for a roll-out vinyl floor in the performing arts and entertainment industries.

Do you supply marley floors?

We supply eleven different types of specialized vinyl marley roll out floors: Harlequin Allegro™, Harlequin Cascade™, Harlequin Fiesta™, Harlequin FreeStyle™, Harlequin Hi-Shine™, Harlequin Marine™, Harlequin Reversible™, Harlequin Reversible Pro™, Harlequin Standfast™, Harlequin Studio™, and Harlequin Studio B®. Additionally, we supply Harlequin TV Tiles™ and Harlequin Tap Tiles™.

Each of our marley floors has been developed for specific applications with the performer’s safety and comfort in mind. Contact us or use our Floor Selector to find the right floor for you.

How can a Harlequin vinyl marley floor be laid?

A permanent marley floor is glued down with adhesive and can’t be removed without risking damage to the floor. Permanent, seamless installation (hot-welding) is also available as part of our installation services. A semi-permanent marley floor is laid using double-sided tape to adhere to the sub-floor. A portable marley floor is rolled out, and the seams are covered with gaffer’s tape or PVC floor tape.

Harlequin offers double-sided tape, PVC tape, and gaffer’s tape in various colors to match Harlequin marley floors—available in single rolls or cases through our online shop or by contacting your Account Executive.

How often should I change my floor tape?

We recommend changing your floor tape every three months, or more often in cases of heavy use.

Harlequin offers double-sided tape, PVC tape, and gaffer’s tape in various colors to match Harlequin vinyl marley floors—available in single rolls or cases through our online shop or by contacting your Account Executive.

Can you use a Harlequin vinyl floor outside?

Yes, but only when you use it in dry conditions or it’s under cover. If it gets wet it will become very slippery. If it is placed in direct sunlight it will heat up and may expand. Lighter colors will stay cooler. For additional information, contact us.

How should I store a Harlequin vinyl floor?

IIf your Harlequin marley floor is not laid permanently, always keep it firmly wound onto the cardboard core from the packaging. This helps prevent the floor from being flattened or dented, making handling easier. Never wind up the rolls without a core inside and never store them horizontally on top of each other with no core to support them, as this will certainly cause them to flatten and oval, resulting in stubborn or permanent ripples. If you must store the rolls flat, ensure that they are not stacked more than two rolls high and that no heavy objects are placed on top.

Harlequin Cascade, Fiesta, Hi-Shine, Marine, Reversible, Reversible Pro, and Standfast should be stored on the core horizontally, not vertically (standing roll on the roll end), which is likely to cause damage to the floor edge. Allegro, Studio, Studio B, and FreeStyle should be stored vertically to prevent compression damage to the foam backing.

Always ensure that the floor is cleaned properly before it is rolled up and stored.

Will a Harlequin vinyl floor crack or degrade over time?

Harlequin vinyl marley floors are designed to withstand gruelling tour schedules and, if properly maintained, will last for many years. We have customers who are still using floors they purchased from us 25 years ago.

How does cold affect a Harlequin vinyl floor?

Harlequin vinyl marley floors are freeze tolerant but, like all vinyl, they get harder and stiffer as the temperature drops. However, when the temperature rises again, they will return to normal. If the weather is cold, the best advice when taking delivery is to take the floor inside as soon as possible.

What type of surface or sub-floor can a Harlequin vinyl floor be laid on?

A Harlequin vinyl marley floor can be laid onto most level subfloors, including concrete, wood, or tiles; however, we don’t advise laying it onto carpet. If a subfloor isn’t level or is unacceptably hard, then a Harlequin sprung dance floor can be used in conjunction with a Harlequin performance surface (marley floor, hardwood, or engineered board). If you are concerned about the suitability of your existing floor, please contact us.

How is a Harlequin vinyl floor supplied?

Harlequin vinyl marley floors are manufactured in rolls, available in widths of either 1.5m (59”) or 2m (78.7”), and in varying roll lengths depending on the chosen product.

What is the best way to move a Harlequin vinyl floor around?

If the floor is being transported to another location, retain the original packaging (box and inserts) for reuse to protect the floor in transit. Ensure that the floor is rolled up tightly using the cardboard core it came on, as it is important to avoid flattening and distorting the roll. Alternatively, you can use Harlequin roll straps or Harlequin storage bags. If you need to transport or store multiple rolls, consider using Harlequin floor roll storage carts.

Harlequin Hi-Shine™

Can I permanently install Hi-Shine?

It is not recommended as permanent flooring.

How should I clean my Harlequin Hi-Shine vinyl floor?

Sweep daily with a soft broom or dust mop to remove any dirt, debris, and dust. Any marks on the floor can be removed by lightly spraying an all-purpose cleaner and wiping with a clean, dry cloth or dust mop (Swiffer® sweeper recommended). If tougher marks remain, isopropyl alcohol can be used.

Do not use abrasive powders or creams, strong solvents such as acetone, bleach, ammonia or highly alkaline solutions. Do not use Goof Off or Goo Gone. That will result in significant damage to your floor.

How do I store my roll of Harlequin Hi-Shine?

When storing, always keep your floor firmly wound onto the cardboard core from the original packaging. This helps to prevent the floor from being flattened or dented and makes handling easier. If the original cardboard cores are no longer available, use a PVC pipe with a minimum diameter of 8cm. Roll the floor as tightly as possible before storage.

Never wind up the rolls without a core inside, and never store them horizontally on top of each other with no core to support them, as this will cause them to flatten, resulting in stubborn or permanent ripples.

What tape do I use to install Harlequin Hi-Shine?

Harlequin Double-Sided Tape is recommended when taping the underside of the floor to a subfloor. The high-tack/low-tack tape is a safe and secure option for working with temporary applications. Top taping of Hi-Shine is not recommended because the removal of the tape could damage the floor.

Is my Harlequin Hi-Shine floor reusable?

Yes, Hi-Shine is not a one-time use event floor. If properly cared for it can be reusable event flooring.
