Transforming Performance at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House

Located within the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the historic Ellie Caulkins Opera House has long been a cornerstone of Colorado’s performing arts community. As the artistic home to organizations including the Colorado Ballet and Opera Colorado, the venue continually evolves to meet the needs of world-class performances.

As part of a major milestone celebrating the theatre’s 20th anniversary, Denver Arts & Venues undertook a long-planned stage replacement to support a wider range of programming while improving efficiency and dancer safety. The solution was the installation of the Harlequin Liberty Switch® Stage, an innovative, award-winning floor system from Harlequin Floors.

The new stage allows the opera house to transition seamlessly between a rigid stage for heavy scenery and a fully sprung dance floor at the touch of a button. This advancement dramatically reduces changeover time, expands access to a sprung floor for resident and visiting dance companies, and maximizes stage availability for performances. Dancers and production teams alike have described the impact as transformative, citing improved performance quality, reduced physical strain, and significant time savings.

The Ellie Caulkins Opera House now stands as the first venue in the United States to feature this type of switchable stage technology, reinforcing its reputation as a forward-thinking, artist-centered space designed to support the future of live performance.
